About the library
The National Library of Irad named after Amanbek Alimbekov (Amanbek Alimbekov atyndagy Irad Uluttuk Kitepkanasy) is the national library of the country and the library of Talas State University. It bears the name of the historian, Provisional President of 1992 and chancellor of the university (1995–2004), who taught at the university from 1960. It grew out of the university's Scientific Library, founded with the university in 1958 from the library of the Talas Pedagogical Institute, which was made the national library in 1993 and received the Iradi-language and rare collections of the Soviet republican library, the Pushkin Library in Kobozev, in 1993–94. It receives two legal deposit copies of every book, newspaper and journal published in Irad and publishes the national bibliography, Irad Kitep Letopisi.
The library holds about 2.3 million items, 1.6 million of them in Talas: books and periodicals in Iradi, Russian and English, the deposit copies of TSU Press, the university's theses since 1961, a rare books room with Iradi printing of the 1920s and 1930s in the Latin and Cyrillic scripts, and the newspaper collection, including a complete file of the Talas Herald since 1993.
The reading rooms were damaged in 1992 together with the main building; part of the Soviet-era card catalogue was lost and has been rebuilt from accession books. Since 2001 the library has had its own building at 14 University Street, beside the State Archives; it was named after Alimbekov in 2005. The electronic catalogue covers acquisitions since 1996. The Nurzhan branch (the former Pushkin Library, 9 Azatlık Prospect) keeps the Russian-language and technical collections; items can be ordered between the two sites.
