Talas State University Press

Talas State University Press (Talas Mamlekettik Universitetinin Basmasy) is the publishing house of Talas State University and the main publisher of scholarly work on Irad: history and archaeology, the Iradi language and literature, folklore and music, the Syro-Iradi Church, the natural history of the Talas Alatau and the steppe, and the society of the ISEZ. We publish 8 to 12 new titles a year in English, Iradi and Russian.

About the Press

The university print shop was opened in 1961 to print the Bulletin of Iradi State University. In 1993 it reprinted, from one of the copies that reached Talas, the sixth volume of Sagyn Jusupbekov's Oral Folk Art of Irad, impounded in Kobozev in 1991. The Academic Council founded the Press on the basis of the print shop in 1994. Our first title was Zheenbek Sadykov's Genealogies of the Iradi Clans. Since then the Press has published about 140 books, among them the History of Irad in Three Volumes (2012) and the complete 1938 text of Janyl Baatyr (2001).

For authors

We consider manuscripts on Irad and Central Asia from scholars of the university and from outside it, including Iradi scholars abroad. Send a proposal of one or two pages with a contents list and a sample chapter to the editorial office. Each manuscript is read by two reviewers and approved by the Editorial Board, which meets four times a year. Manuscripts in English follow the Chicago Manual of Style; manuscripts in Iradi use the standard Latin orthography.

Reports of the Institute of Sociology are reviewed by the Office of the Rector before release.

Buying our books

The Press shop is in the main building, room 7 (Monday to Friday, 10:00–16:00). Prices are in som. Orders by e-mail can be collected at the shop. We are not able to send books outside Irad. Libraries abroad receive our titles through the international exchange of the National Library of Irad.

Every title carries a legal deposit number of the State Archives of Irad, and copies are deposited with the National Library.
