Abstract

A story in eight parts, set in Bazar-Korgon and the walnut valley above it between June and October 2007. Zuhra, the daughter of a lowland walnut buyer, is promised to the son of a hill family when the bazaar's elders invite the Gendarmerie down from Tash-Kömür, and the ceasefire line agreed in Bishkek is drawn along the foot of the hills. A grandmother who came down the same road in 1961, a broken betrothal, a painted pole on an oil drum and four hundred metres of empty asphalt: the bazaar and the hills of one clan, the Chubar, become two sides of a border. This is the author's revised and expanded text of 2019; a shorter version is story 9 of Twelve Kilometres (Arsha Books, 2015; English 2016).
