Rabat-i-Safed coins go to Nurzhan for testing
10 October 2026 · Research

Kara-Khanid coins found by the university's expedition will be analysed at the Nurzhan Polytechnic Institute before publication.
The group of worn 10th- and 11th-century Kara-Khanid coins found in September at the caravanserai of Rabat-i-Safed will be sent to the materials laboratory of the Nurzhan Polytechnic Institute to establish what they are made of. Dr Marat Imanaliev, who led the season, said early tests suggest a very high lead content.
The finds will be deposited with the National Historical Museum of Irad once the study is published. Less than a fifth of the site has been excavated. Dr Imanaliev will give an open lecture on the season on 21 October.
